The geological memory of the Langhe

The Langhe hills trace their history back to millions of years ago when a deep sea covered these lands. The sedimentary rocks we walk upon today are the guardians of that ancient, vanished basin: our soils preserve its components, minerals and memory.

A silent witness to this past is the Lanternfish Fossil, found amongst our vineyards and chosen as the centrepiece of our new logo.

Four villages, a single landscape

Roddi, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba and Rodello

Our vineyards cover a total of 5 hectares, a mosaic of vines spread across the municipalities of Roddi, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba and Rodello.

In this natural amphitheatre, every hill and every valley creates a unique microclimate which, combined with the geology characterising the soil, gives our grapes distinctive nuances and aromas.

We are in a compact yet surprisingly varied territory, where a mere few hundred metres is enough to completely alter the character of the wine.

The Voice of Our Soils

Marls, Sands and Ancient Earths

We have learnt to listen to the subtle differences that make each vineyard a world unto itself, interpreting the richness that arises from the diversity of the geological formations beneath our soil, and thus of our land.

Indeed, the Langhe are the product of the earth's ancient history, dating back millions of years. The sedimentary rocks that characterise the region tell the story of the vanished Tertiary Piedmont Basin, a deep sea in which the layers forming these hills were deposited, during a period ranging from 30 to 5 million years ago. The soils that have developed on these rocks preserve their components and the memory of the ancient sea.

Each hill and each valley, with its own shape, altitude, aspect and exposure, creates a unique microclimate which, combined with the different soils, gives the grapes distinct nuances and aromas depending on where they grow.

Our vineyards stretch across Roddi, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba and Rodello. In Rodello, the Lequio Formation are the oldest rocks, dating back some 12 million years. This formation combines highly calcareous marls with layers of sand, giving the soils a silty-sandy texture with a high limestone content. Conversely, in Monforte d'Alba we find the sandy Sant'Agata Fossili marls, composed of predominantly marly layers alternating with rare sandy layers, which combine to create a loamy soil with a small proportion of sand. In La Morra, we describe the Sant'Agata Fossili marl being of the laminated type -- it is abundant in silt but also in clay, resulting in a fine-textured, rich soil. In Roddi, the Sant'Agata marl changes again, as here we find the 'typical' variety, composed mainly of fine silt, which produces compact and fertile soils. Each vineyard expresses itself through a combination of the soil and the local microclimate: sunny and breezy in Rodello, cool and bright in Monforte, warm and sheltered in La Morra, and warm with more humidity in Roddi.

Every bottle we produce is a geological journey: a perfect balance between the energy of the sun and the legacy of the ancient sea of the Langhe.

Roddi is at the heart of our story. Here you'll find the winery, our home, and the Bricco Ambrogio and Fontanassa vineyards.

The soils are compact and fertile, with a warm, slightly humid microclimate that allows the grapes to ripen with aromatic richness and gentle tannins.

For us, this place is not just a dot on the map of the Langhe: it is the everyday landscape in which we live and work, season after season.

Grape Varieties of the Langhe

Native Roots

Since 2015, we have been cultivating the native grape varieties of the Langhe with the utmost care: Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera and Arneis.

These are grapes that local farmers have been growing for centuries and which have found their fullest expression on our hills, becoming true symbols of adaptation and resilience.

Certified sustainable viticulture

We firmly believe in viticulture that respects the land that sustains us: this is why we follow a low-environmental impact model which, in 2023, enabled us to obtain SQNPI sustainability certification -- the National Quality System for Integrated Production.

For us, the quality of the wine is paramount to the health of the vineyard and the protection of biodiversity.

La scelta di Manzoni Bianco e Merlot: Spirito Rock’n’roll

Nel 2016, guidato da un impulso fatto di passione e curiosità, io, Lorenzo, ho scelto di percorrere un sentiero nuovo piantando il Manzoni Bianco e il Merlot.

È stata la mia scelta "rock’n’roll": un desiderio di camminare controvento per trovare una voce originale e alzare lo sguardo al di fuori della tradizione.

Da questa ricerca di libertà, seguendo i battiti del cuore e le strade meno battute, sono nati i miei due Fuoriclasse.

The dialogue between grape variety and territory

Every hill has a different voice

Our philosophy is based on the unbreakable bond between the vine and the land:

• In Rodello: we grow Dolcetto, Barbera, Arneis and Manzoni Bianco. Here, the sunny microclimate and the soils of the Lequio Formation lend our whites a vibrant freshness, whilst giving our reds intense colour and an enveloping tannic structure.
• In Monforte d'Alba, La Morra and the Bricco Ambrogio vineyard in Roddi: we let Nebbiolo be the interpreter of the territory. Through its nuances, this noble grape variety highlights the diverse compositions of the Sant'Agata marl, giving rise to distinctive and profound Barolos.
• In the Fontanassa vineyard in Roddi: our ancestral land yields grapes of innate richness and is home to a mosaic of varieties. Half the vineyard is dedicated to Nebbiolo, whilst the other half is planted with Arneis, Manzoni Bianco and Merlot.

Every bunch of grapes we harvest is the result of manual and artisanal work, designed to bring the authentic identity of these sun-drenched hills into every bottle.
